Eng - Relative Pronouns

relative pronoun is used to connect a clause or phrase to a noun or pronoun. You see them used everyday with the most common relative pronouns being: who, whom, which, whoever, whomever, whichever, and that.

Examples from The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde:

p. 5 ... as though he sought to imprison within his brain some curious dream from which he feared he might awake.

p. 9 ... at least had been chatted about in the penny newspapers, which is the  nineteenth-century standard of immortality.

p 17 ... made a little moue of discontent to Lord Henry, to whom he had rather taken a fancy.

p.28 ... Lord Henry Wotton strolled /.../ to call on  his uncle, Lord Fermor, /.../, whom the outside world called selfish ...

p. 30 Who are her people?

Eng 7 - Walk with Talks in London

On Sunday 20th of September you will all (almost) guide us when we walk through London.

Your task at hand is to find an interesting walk between the two landmarks given, and then decide who is going to talk about what. Each walk should last 1-1.5 hours. There will be some walking to do.

Walk 1. Hyde Park to Westminster Abbey
Christoffer, Drilona, Pontus, Elin
Walk 2. Big Ben to Trafalgar Square
Alva, Erik, Matilda, Ola
Walk 3. From Trafalgar Square to Leicester Square via Covent Garden
Henny, Fanny, Olivia, Shkurte

On Tuesday 22nd of September
Oscar will talk about the Imperial War Museum before we enter, and
Hilda will talk about the Globe Theatre before we see the play.

How to do this:
  • Use maps on the internet to see what there is
  • Do not just pick the shortest route. We have all afternoon to walk around.
  • Everyone has to talk – at least a few minutes.
  • Make it interesting. Do not just talk about buildings and statues, but also the people connected to them.

Eng 6 - Magna Carta - my digital rights

For about two weeks, starting Thursday March 19, we will work with the British Library's current activity: Magna Carta - my digital rights. What does it entail? You are to have debates about different topics related to the internet and the rights and responsibilies that come with it. The topics are all from The British Library's present project "Magna Carta - My Digital Rights" and you will at the end of each debate agree on a clause that you want to be included in the Magna Carta for the digital age.

We will have a look at, and compare, the Magna Carta (1215), the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). You can find them here:

Magna Carta

The clauses of Magna Carta explained

The Declaration of Independence

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

But, before we dig into these legal documents we will watch short films about each of them, slightly easier to digest than the written texts.

What is Magna Carta?

Magna Carta 800 years

The Continental Congress

Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Each debate topic will be introduced by a short film from the British Library, and you are to choose what you want to debate and on which side you want to be. NB. You do not have to argue your own point of view, so everyone should realise the opinions stated in the debates may not be personal. Here are the topics and introductory films (they will be shown in class):

Prisoners right to use the internet

Internet - a human right?

The Web in times of crisis

Should schools censor the internet?

Cyberbullying and the freedom of speech

Eng 5 - Compare and Contrast - Cultural phenomena

You are to write an essay where you compare the life of the characters in the film Freedom Writers with your own life as a teenager in Sweden. You cannot write about everything, so you have to choose what you want to write about - school, living conditions, parents, safety etc.

Your essay should be approximately 500 words long.

I have talked about the format of a compare-and-contrast essay, and here are the pictures of that PowerPoint:

Here are the knowledge requirements this essay covers:

I muntliga och skriftliga framställningar i olika genrer kan eleven formulera sig relativt varierat, relativt tydligt och relativt sammanhängande. Eleven kan formulera sig med visst flyt och i någon mån anpassat till syfte, mottagare och situation. Eleven bearbetar, och gör förbättringar av, egna framställningar.

Svenska 3 - skriva akademiska texter + referat

Film 3 tar upp gymnasiearbetets struktur.

I Film 4 går de igenom hur man skriver referat.

Svenska 3 - argumenterande

Det muntliga NP svenska 3 är argumenterande. Här kommer lite information om texttypen så att du kan repetera det du egentligen redan vet.

Den första filmen är tydlig men tar inte upp motargument eller källhantering, vilket krävs i svenska 3.

Nästa film går igenom i mer detalj, vilket passar svenska 3 bättre.

Här är en tydlig mall man kan följa vid argumenterande text, oavsett om det är skriftligt eller muntligt.
